Welcome to the School Counseling Program website for Kennedy Elementary. My name is Kim Oaks-Blair and it is a joy and privilege for me to serve Kennedy’s community as a School Counselor. I have worked for several years inside Kingsport City Schools as a counselor here at Kennedy and, prior to that, as a counselor for 10 years for a grant funded position working in various local high schools. I truly enjoy my position and the opportunity to work with students and families at Kennedy Elementary.
In Counseling Connection classes we will cover various topic to address personal/social, academic, and career development. These lessons will include information on the 7 Habits of Happy Kids by Covey, responsibility, safety (see link below), leadership, character education, and college/career readiness. Our class lessons will follow both the State of Tennessee Model for Comprehensive School Counseling (our state standards for school counseling programs), as well as the standards presented in the ASCA (American School Counseling Association) National Model. More information on these requirements and recommendations can be found at https://www.tn.gov/assets/entities/education/attachments/comp_sch_counsel_model.pdf and https://www.schoolcounselor.org/school-counselors-members/asca-national-model, respectively.
I have attached detailed information about our Counseling Program at Kennedy in links for you to access below. My hope is that it will give you a better understanding of the mission, vision, and goals of the program and a better understanding of my role as the School Counselor.
